TURANGA CREEK

In the weekend Brendon and I went up to Auckland to celebrate my good friends birthday with her and her hubby. We discovered a very cute winery, went to a chocolate boutique and had a few drinks at a bar. All in all it was a wonderful day so I thought I'd share some of the photos from our winery adventure.

We did a spot of wine tasting with some srummy nibbles and then went out back to explore the vineyard. We even got to try some of the grapes. Will definitely be coming back here again. Happy birthday babe!

JAMES + CARA

I've just finished making wedding invitations for my good friends James and Caramay. We based the design around these round boxes and I used a 3inch circle punch to cut out all of the circles. I printed the "invitation side" on a thick paper stock and the "photo side" on sticker sheets. I tacked on the invitation side to the ribbon lining it all up and then I peeled off the sticker side and attached it to the back of the invitation.

Each invite has 7 circles on a ribbon which can be hung on a hook or attached to a fridge. I think my poor fingers need a bit of a rest from putting them all together! I must say, I love the little teepee illustration we came up with.

In other news, I bought my first set of watercolours and I can't wait to try them this weekend! Eeee.

BOW AND ARROW

This is one of my favourite outfits at the moment. It's so nice to wear something light and flowy in the summer and this skirt by rpm is perfect for that. I love the bow tied through the eyelets at the top. I am also OBSESSED with my House of Harlow arrow ring that I purchased recently. Got to love the Aztec styled jewelery that's around at the moment.

It's a public holiday in New Zealand on Monday and I am looking forward to sleeping in!

THE REDWOODS

My Mum and I went for a 3 hour hike/jog through the Redwood Forest in Rotorua yesterday. It was a beautiful day and we saw all sorts of lovely scenery. Unfortunately there weren't any bunnys or deer... But we did manage to spot a little Wallaby hopping around! I'd never seen one in the wild so that was special :)
I took these photos on our hike and added these little animal illustrations. x

FEIJOA WINE: part four

At long last our Feijoa wine is ready! (You can check out the process of our feijoa wine here) So I did a quick wee label to pop on our mismatched bottles. They're not typical looking labels but I've seen some really cool, unconventional ones around lately. I particularly like the Logan Wine labels by War Design which have embroidered flower patterns on them. I love it when an old trade or craft comes back into style :)

It was a lovely bubbly surprise when we first opened a bottle of our wine... Somehow it was sparkling! Apparently it's called the Malic Acid Effect and it just happens once in a blue moon to a batch. And I've got to say I hope it happens often! It was super yummy and sweet. Almost a wine crossed with a cider. Delish!

In other news I've been a bit obsessed with putting little succulent flowers in through a braid in my hair. They're great because they last longer than other flowers and don't end up looking all droopy in your hair :)

HOWL

Firstly... a very belated Happy New Year!!! I haven't been on the internet or my computer for over two weeks! It has been both freeing and terrifying at the same time :) It's amazing how dependent we become on technology. It's a real love hate relationship for me.
Anyway, I've had a nice break away. We went camping and it was practically torrential wind and rain the whole time! But I enjoyed myself regardless. We had one afternoon of sunshine and I somehow managed to get burnt... Which happens to be very unusual for me. But thank goodness for aloe vera and Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment!

This shirt dress is one that I altered from an XXL tshirt that I found. I've always wanted a shirt with a wolf on it... especially inspired by Devon Smiths print.

A MUSTACHE CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas! It all started with our family photo first thing in the morning... If you look closely you'll notice that Brendon is just holding a stick to his face :)
When we opened our presents my brother had got me a very cool set of "MunchStache Cookie Cutters" and I quickly made some chocolate shortbread so they could be added to our lunch... Yum!

It was the first Christmas that Brendon and I had hosted and it was fun preparing all the goodies! And as usual, my Mums cooking was amazing :)

I also got a Fuji Instax camera from my lovely husband. I've always wanted a Polaroid and after they decided to discontinue production of film I thought I might never have one. We've been snapping happily away ever since :) I love being able to watch it develop in front of my eyes.
Well, we're of to Hot Water Beach for New Years. Can't wait for my first ocean swim of the summer!

THE TREE

This year I wanted to "make" my own tree... It didn't exactly turn out the way I planned but it was a good learning experience! I ended up taking a dead branch from the side of the road (which makes for a really cheap tree!) It had obviously been dead for quite some time as it was really brittle and keep breaking... annoying. But I made do. It wasn't the shape I was going for but it had this amazing moss growing all over it which I was quite keen on. Anyway, this is what I ended up with. Once the fairy lights were on and the presents underneath it looked festive enough :)

I also tried to make my wrapping look a but more rustic to match the tree. I used feathers, buttons, old books, raffia and mail paper. I also used Rob Ryans "And I Walked Tape" which was a hit. More photos of our Christmas day to come soon... Happy Holidays everyone!

NATIVITY

I had been wanting to do a Rob Ryan styled vinyl for a while and when I was asked to help out with some Christmas decorations at my local church I thought it would be the perfect opportunity! I drew out the nativity scene on paper with a black ink pen which I scanned into my computer. I then vectorised it in Illustrator and sent it to the vinyl cutter (I wish I had my own!)
They light it up at night and it looks quite cool on the street. Hooray for Christmas spirit :)

I just love shirt dresses... They're the perfect thing to slip on over your bikini on the way to the beach. This rpm anchor button dress is one of my favourites at the moment. I love the buttons down the side and the cute little hat detail on the back. I'm looking forward to some serious beach time this New Years :)

DIY CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

This is the first Christmas that Brendon and I will spend together as a married couple... And it's also the first year we're having the family get together at our place! So I'm especially excited for all the festivities. I decided that I wanted to make a unique tree with handmade decorations that suit us and our wee house. They're not exactly the typical Christmas look but I'm quite fond of how they turned out :)

You'll need:
Some paper to rip up to papier-maché with, glue (I find wheat-based adhesive best for this type of project), plain baubles or polystyrene balls, masking tape, cotton/string, pens and paint.

If your bauble doesn't already have string attached you can make a loop with your cotton and secure it with masking tape. Then rip up your paper and cover the entire ball. I used an old text book that was gathering dust in my garage. Then use a pen or paint to do illustrations and text. I also found some spotty feathers that I added with a button on top to hide the join. And voila! Easy peasy.

FORAGING

This year I've decided that I'm going to make our Christmas tree out of sticks/branches and I'm also going to attempt to make my own decorations. So the other day we went to the Arboretum to forage for some pinecones and sticks. I thinks its going to end up a bit rustic but I'm looking forward to creating it :)

THE BACKYARD

The hubby has been away this week building a house at National Park... but before he left he did a bit of unconventional lawn mowing! So even though he's not here I still get reminded that he loves me.
I have no idea how he did the little dot for the i. Turns out he can draw better with a lawn mower than he can with a pencil :p
While he's away my Mum is coming to visit and we're going to go up Mount Pirongia... She's a bit of a fitness freak and I just hope I can keep up with her!

My latest book obsession involves the lovely, collectable Popular Penguin. I bought my first one at the beginning of the year sometime so I could discover what makes "the classics" so classic. Each time I finish one of these orange delights I treat myself to another one! I can't wait to have a whole bookshelf of them :) I have a bit of an infatuation for owning books... there is something beautiful about the printed word all bound up, sitting on the shelf waiting for you when you need it.

I love to lie in my backyard reading and soaking up the spring sun. I couldn't help but put in a snap of New Zealand's wee appearance in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland :)

EMBROIDERY HOOPS

I love that embroidery hoops have become popular wall hangings over the last few years. The possibilities are endless with them! I decided to make a set of pinboards in our little entrance way. It was a great way for me to add a splash of colour as I tend to get stuck in a black/cream/wooden colour scheme around the house.

I cut circles out of softboard to fit in the hoops and covered it with fabric. It's as simple as that! You could also use sheets of corkboard with some polystyrene behind it. I've been adding little printouts of artwork I like and notes with the typewritter.

DAISY CHAINS BY THE SEA

On Thursday night my husband and I took a 45 minute drive to the ocean for a date. Now that daylight savings has hit we have so much more 'sun time' in the evening to play outside :) I made a daisy chain and we had fish n chips on top of a hill overlooking the ocean with the sun setting on the horizon. It was a lovely evening which has me super excited for the fast approaching summer!

Oh my goodness! How adorable are these?! Brother and sister duo from Dundee have handmade these beautiful bow ties from vintage and remnant fabrics. Each "Bell and Belle" bow tie is adjustable, reversible and self tying. I want one!

FEIJOA WINE: part three

Well it's been a while since my last feijoa wine update. But at last... We have taken the wine out of the demijohn and bottled it! We were actually a bit naughty and probably left in there longer than usual.

But it was looking lovely and clear when we syphoned it into the bottles.

And of course we had a cheeky taste before the wine made it to the bottles! Yum! We used an assortment of different bottles we had collected over the last few months. I love that they are all mismatched shapes, sizes and colours. Now for the fun part... Making labels!

NINE FRAMES, ONE PHOTO

Wow, I just realised that it's been a while since my last post! It's been a busy couple of weeks. I've been doing a few things around the house and these snaps are of our 'prototype' wedding photo for our lounge. (Sorry they're a bit grainy, but you get the idea!) It was a bit of a test to see if it would work: putting one big photo in a bunch of different frames. I'm not 100% happy with it yet... I'm wondering if I should try using a different photo. What do you think?

LITTLE BROWN NOTEBOOK

I bought this sweet notebook from Rox a couple of weeks ago. It's by a Chinese company called Jiukoushan Studio and I'm just loving the brown "mail paper" pages. I've been using my trusty Staedtler fineliner, a white gel pen and a pencil. I like the effect you can get from such a basic combination of colour... or lackthereof. Here are scans of the first three pages I've sketched so far.

I also ordered Devon Smith's first zine on etsy, which is made up of "potentially embarrassing drawings of people who i see and think are cute and special." I can't wait to get it!

PENCIL-PURSE

I saw this photo the other day and fell in love with the wallpaper... I wish I knew where it was from! And because my handbag has slowly been converting into a giant pencil-case (I actually found three hole punches, a craft knife and two gluesticks in it the other day!) I decided to make a pencil-case out of fabric inspired by the wallpaper.

So I got some calico and painted tiny little triangles all over it with fabric paint and then set it with the iron. I turned my fabric inside out and zipped along the sides with the sewing machine. Then I (attempted) to stitch on two little arrows in the bottom corner.

I ended up making quite a mess! I'm a newbie when it comes to sewing so I had lots of hot cups of coffee to get me through the frustration :) After much quick-un-picking and clamping I ended up with this...

Loving this teal colour at the moment.

After doing a post about being "inspired by brandon boyd" I decided it was time to get out the pen and paper and do some illustration myself! I always go through phases of sketching... I think how often I draw is determined by how inspired I am.
I've always been quite interested in Native American Indian culture... Their connection to the land, animals, people... And this illustration is the result of my curiosity. It's actually made me want to do a bit of research on its people. Perhaps I should pay a visit to the library tomorrow.

I sketched the girl out with pencil and then went over it with my beloved Staedtler fineliners (I can't go anywhere without them!) I'd have loved to actually paint her... But unfortunately I didn't have the time. So I coloured her in photoshop instead.

DEAR PHOTOGRAPH

Dear Photograph is this cool website that a friend introduced me to. Its about "taking a picture of a picture from the past in the present". I thought it was such a novel idea! I love looking back at photos of my childhood. It brings back so many memories and reminds me of how much has changed. My parents still live in the house that I grew up in and while I was visiting them this weekend I thought I'd give it a go! It was a bit harder than I thought it would be.. trying to line everything up (especially when there were obstacles in the way that weren't there 10 years ago!)

I'd love to give it another go (maybe in the summer when it's not so cold outside!) with a better camera and more time to play around.

He recently collaborated with Hurley and H.O.P.E. to raise funds and bring awareness to conserving our oceans. Along the walls Brandon wrote: "We are an island. And whether by luck or misfortune, we have nowhere else to go. We are a beautiful island. But we are misguided and off course. Demand clean energy! Ban single use plastics! Protect our island, and give hope to our children's children. Leave the island better than you found it."

I do some work for a local restaurant called Iguana and I thought I'd share some of the "weekday rituals" posters that I've done for them. They have a bit of a retro vibe and were all created from black and white photographs from the 40's and 50's.

The idea is to have a ritual each day and some type of deal to go with it. Sweet Tooth Tuesday is my favourite day... I can never turn down a dessert! Yum.

ORDER OF SERVICE

Soo.... I thought I'd do one last post about my wedding... It's the last I promise!
For our Order of Service I really wanted to do something a little different. I like little details, things that are a bit unexpected with an element of discovery. I decided to do a design that has four sides and folds inside itself three times... A little hard to describe in words! Here is a wee clip to show how it folds...

Some people got it right away, others took a while to figure it out... And some just couldn't get it at all! But fun none the less :) Plus it entertained our guests while they waited for me to arrive!

We really wanted this to be an opportunity to honour and thank our families and bridal party. It was also a good way to "introduce" our bridal party to guests who didn't know them. We also included photos of our parents on their wedding day! They're too cute :)

TAUPO WINTER GETAWAY

This Queens Birthday weekend my hubby Brendon and I went to Taupo for a little getaway. We went partly for a winter escape and partly to celebrate my birthday which we didn't get to do properly as I had a nasty cold at the time.

We arrived in Taupo just in time to watch the sun go down and have a stroll by the lake. The trees were still in all their autumn glory.

Then we went and had a nice hot spa in the thermally heated private pools at DeBretts. The next day we put on our adventure hats and went wherever the breeze lead us. We went to Huka Falls and took in the lovely scenery.

Brendon bought me these shoes for my birthday which I just LOVE. I'd been eying them up for a while and now I'm hunting through my wardrobe for outfits to go with them :)

On the drive home we found a driveway lined with beautiful trees that made an archway and littered the road with leaves. It was so pretty we stopped to take a few photos.

We had such great time wining and dining... Can't wait for our next weekend away!

FEIJOA WINE: part two

After letting our brew hang in the bucket we got to put it into the demijohn (or carboy). To start off there was a ton of sediment floating around in it! After a week we drained it into a pot and caught all the feijoa bits in a cheese cloth, then put it back into the demijohn.

Each week we syphon out the liquid and get rid of the sediment that has gathered at the bottom. Each week it gets clearer and clearer! It's already tasting yummy, really sweet but still quite strong...
Still a long way to go yet.

OUR PERFECT DAY

On the 12th of March I got to marry my best friend.
The day was absolutely perfect. There was not a cloud in the sky, even though it was forecast to rain! We were so blessed and we had a fun filled day shared with friends and family.

Photos were done by the tremendously talented Sutherland Kovach Studio. I love their style and they were so much fun to work with. I'd highly recommend them! Here are some of the snaps they took during the day... You might want to go grab a hot drink, this post is a long one!

These beautiful flowers were done by the lovely Angela Rogers.
The wedding was a real DIY job and I tried to make/do as much as I could myself... I found these cute peach flower hair clips for my bridesmaids which I also used to make the boys buttonholes. I made the leaves out of fabric and added dried berries and pearls. I also decided to make my own fasinator/birdcage veil... which I was still finishing the morning of the wedding! It was craft–mania!

Clever Ruth Perry made my dress from a couple sketches that I gave her.

I collected birdcages over the course of our engagement from all sorts  of places. I put them on a collection of old books I had and used them  as centerpieces. I found glass bird tealight candles for $1.98 each!  It was such a steal and my Dad and I painted them peach to brighten up  the tables. I used an assortment of glass jars and glued scrabble letters on for the  table numbers. They also doubled as vases for the flowers.
For name tags I hand wrote everyones names on paper dollies.
We  got a stamp made with our names and two birds on it, the same ones I used on our invitations. It's such a cost  effective way to add detail and tie everything together. We used a peach  ink pad and stamped them on all the napkins.

I really wanted to have a lolly table as I have such a sweet tooth! I  sourced as many white lollies as I could find and put them in different  sized jars. I got our names and birds screen printed on calico which I  then cut into hearts and hand stitched onto more calico that was then  sewed into bags! It was a lot of work but so worth it... They were a  hit! A nice little keep sake too :)

PHOTOBOOTH

As a bit of a prelude to posting some wedding photos here are a few (ok, well a lot) of the photobooth snaps that got taken before the reception. Brendon and I are always pulling ridiculous faces and we love a bit of silliness so this was a fun way for us to add a bit of that to the wedding.
Besides, who doesn't like a good stash?

T&B INVITES

After posting the fiesta wedding invite I thought it might be a good idea to put up some pictures of my own wedding invites. I've been a bit obsessed with birds for a wee while and they some how managed to sneak on here... And then proceeded to permeate the whole wedding!
This is a two piece (double sided) design that was tied together with cotton and a circle rsvp card.
I used a fiskars embossing corner punch to do the edges and make it a little more special.

I also decided to make my own envelopes (New Zealand seems to have a very limited variety of envelopes). I was hooked on the string and button styled envelopes and could only ever find them in a long skinny size or large A4. It's a good thing weddings are a one–off deal... I had very sore hands after all the punching, cutting and tying :)

FEIJOA WINE : part one

My husband and I have a lovely feijoa tree in our yard and just before autumn hits they drop from the tree by the hundreds... Not much fun when it's time to mow the lawns! With some encouragement from Brendon's brother we decided to have our first crack at making feijoa wine.

After freezing and defrosting the feijoas we mashed them in a sterilised bucket and added some sultanas.

After a few days of hanging in the bucket we separated the juice from the pulp. The feijoas were looking more like gherkins at this stage! Then we added sugar water and a bunch of yeast, nutrients and the like.

It's hanging out for another couple of days, then we get to put it in the demijohn! It's exciting checking on it each day to see how it's doing. I don't know if I'll be able to wait four or so months to taste it!

So I finally got my underwater camera developed from summers gone by. The quality isn't great – it's a disposable after all – but it's still fun to see how they turned out.


Paddling around Goat Island in a glass bottom kayak. That little black smudge in the water is a wee penguin that swam along with us for a while. We named him Larry.

In this months New Zealand Weddings Magazine (Autumn 2011) there is a feature called Some Like It Hot which is based on a Mexican Fiesta!

The talented photographers at Sutherland Kovach Studio shot these cute photos and asked me to design them an invite for the theme.

JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON

Well I've finally decided that it was about time I jumped on the blogging bandwagon. I thought I'd start off with a few shots I snapped today of the city in my favourite season... Autumn. Hamilton always looks so lovley at this time of year, but it also starts to get a bit cold! I bought myself a cute pair of gloves this weekend to prepare myself for winter.
